Fig. 143. Cross-Head, Bates-Corliss.
"... the cross-head, Fig. 143, is of the solid box form, fitted with a forged steel pin which is tapered and ground to a joint and is held in place with nut; the shoes are adjustable with wedges having bearings the entire length and can be removed while the cross-head is in place without disengaging connecting or piston rods. The connecting rod is shown in Fig. 144 ... " New Catechism of the Steam Engine (1904) by N. Hawkins, M.E. |

animation from a DSC: the Drummond Greyhound |

I created this animation in 2001 using a JVC GC-S5 1.3Mpixel Digital Still Camera. The lens is fixed length, equivalent to 35mm lens on a 35mm camera. The aperture is F3.2/F8. In sequence mode it takes sixteen shots in two seconds on one 1280x1024 frame. I went to the Museum of Scotland and set up the camera opposite the mechanical model of Dugald Drummond's North British Railway 4-4-0 No.479 "Abbotsford". I had to take 4 or 5 sequences to ensure getting as complete a representation as possible of one revolution of the coupled wheels. Obviously, as every afficionado of westerns knows, the racy old stagecoach wheels do sometimes go backwards as well as forwards. The editing of the images and sequencing was a nightmare. It took months. As did the creation of the javascript that controls the display of the animation. If I wanted to do this again I would get a modern camera. But I think I've demonstrated that the thing works in principle, which was all that I wanted to do. Now I'm looking to generalise use of the script. |
